| The hot (80-85 degrees) and humid weather was
nearly identical to last year at the second annual Buckeye Trail 50K Fun
Run. The course, which starts in Brecksville, Ohio, about 15 miles south
of Cleveland, traverses a section of the Buckeye Trail (which itself covers
1200+ miles along the perimeter of the state of Ohio) within the Cleveland
Metroparks and the Cuyahoga Valley National Recreation Area. It's mostly
an out-and-back course which, though not mountainous, is somewhat difficult
due to the constant ups and downs and the narrow foot trails. The course was altered slightly this year to reduce congestion early on in the race. This resulted in a slightly shorter distance (by a couple hundred yards), but it didn't matter - the couse record was in jeopardy anyway. Mark Godale pulled away with the lead around the 22-mile mark and never looked back, charging the uphills the rest of the way to the finish. Terry Hawk and Robin Fry also smashed last year's winning time of 5:12. While most of the runners this year were veteran ultrarunnners, three runners completed their first ultra: Glenn Dumonthier, Conrad Halling and Bob Strong. Thanks to Leo Lightner for assistance with putting on the race, to the NEODeads (NorthEast Ohio Dead Runners Society) for manning and supplying the aid stations (the "All Bude Aid Station", the "Black Shorts Station" and the "Aren't We At The Turnaround Yet ?" station) and to Gwen Goss for supplying the sports drink. |
